It gives me a great sense of accomplishment in releasing the first-ever online edition of Journal of Dentistry Defence Section (JDDS). The dawn of this decade marks an important milestone in the history of the Journal as it goes online with the first issue of 2020. Since its inception in 2006, as an official publication of the Indian Dental Association Defence branch, the Journal has grown from strength to strength and as a natural progression in the present-day, technology-driven world, the need for getting an online platform for its widely acclaimed offline edition had been felt for quite some time.
The untiring effort, time and energy invested in this endeavor by the office of the Director General Dental Services, and all concerned agencies are of unfathomable magnitude. The onerous task of getting the requisite permissions and approvals in making the online edition a reality, has finally fructified. It is a matter of pride for all of us in accomplishing the task of putting online a first-of-its-kind multispecialty dental journal in the country wherein professionals and academicians of the Armed Forces Dental Services would showcase the ongoing research projects at its various centers of excellence, apart from the cutting-edge clinical work being done across the length and breadth of the country.
There has been a paradigm shift in almost every aspect of the dental health care in the last 20 years, and the ever-evolving dynamic world of the dental sciences has inspired us to regularly update and innovate the existing investigative techniques and surgical skills. While we follow the path shown to us by past luminaries in the field, we also need to imbibe and seamlessly integrate fresh ideas in the existing evidence-based treatment protocols and there cannot be a better tool to compile and showcase it, other than an online journal of our own.
the Road Ahead
While we acknowledge the stupendous effort put in by everyone, we must also understand that a bigger responsibility lies ahead. As the Journal in its online version is an open access, with extensive visibility to everyone in the vast health-care sector across the globe, the onus is on us to make it an academic resource of repute, in terms of high-pedigree research articles and validated innovative ideas which have the potential of providing newer modalities with predictable treatment outcomes.
To that end, I am sanguine that the entire Army Dental Corps fraternity shall take it on itself an ethically binding pledge to contribute to this Journal wholeheartedly with a self-check on issues pertaining to plagiarism and articles which have a high index of value addition to our existing knowledge of different nuances of dentistry in general and the various specialties of dental sciences in particular.
The Journal should not be just limited to showcasing our work to the outer world, but also act as a confluence of knowledge, instrumental in consistently publishing intellectually stimulating articles of high cerebral value, which can be of immense significance and utility to the practicing clinicians and academicians in the dental cosmos.
The Journal presently shall be published biannually, but I am sure that in the times to come and as the Journal grows in stature, the frequency of publication shall further increase, which will enable faster processing of the articles and will give us the scope to include more articles in a year. To extract the best benefit out of the enhanced frequency, we need to encourage more practice-based articles, state-of-the-art content, and critical review articles. We must set ourselves a goal to get it indexed in the shortest possible time. My advice to the editorial board would be to accept it as a challenge and work toward it with focus on maintaining high standards of article quality and encourage authors to contribute their original work and showcase impactful clinical work.
Lack of impact factor impedes the submission of high-performance papers to the Journal because individual researchers hesitate to publish in a Journal without an impact factor, due to recognition and credit point constraints that demand performance assessment through these metrics. Though our Journal has a long history and it continues to improve with time, we cannot really overlook the importance ascribed to the ranking exercises. It is time for us to strive hard at taking the Journal truly global and continue to work hard to help the Journal in climbing up the ranking ladder.
While the editorial board has its task cutout in the form of ensuring consistently high-impact articles for the Journal, the authors also have a responsibility of taking this Journal to the greater heights it deserves and justify the hard work put in by everyone in making it a reality. Together, we all would work toward making the Journal a truly global publication, and I have no doubt that JDDS will establish itself as a Journal of repute. In the end, I would like to offer a word of thanks to the contributors, editorial board, and our publishers Wolters Kluwer Medknow for their due diligence in setting up the online platform in a time-bound manner despite a stringent time line.
